|Two other shores: Antwerp and New York
Between 1843 and 1930 millions of emigrants from all over Europe came to Antwerp, Belgium. From there they departed for the New World. Between 1873 and 1935 the Red Star Line shipping company transported almost three million people from Antwerp to America and Canada. The Red Star Line museum in Antwerp remains a place of remembrance for the millions of emigrants who set out for a new life in the States via Antwerp.
Eugeen Van Mieghem, a local painter, born in the port of Antwerp, documented with paint and pastel the immigrants he saw each day passing by.
